Deshalb waren Fans und Spieler gleichermaßen nervös, denn es gab nur zwei Möglichkeiten, wie sich Thun den achten Platz sichern konnte. Entweder gewinnen sie ihr Spiel oder FC Sion verliert. Überraschend ist es deshalb nicht, dass FC Thun mit viel Mut und Hingabe an das letzte Spiel herangegangen ist. Vor dem Spiel war Thun-Trainer Marc Schneider noch voller Hoffnung: „Ich bin guter Dinge und glaube, dass wir den eingeschlagenen Weg nur folgen müssen. Unser großes Ziel des Ligaerhalts werden wir bereits morgen erreichen.“

Am 3. August war es so weit und der FC Thun trat gegen den FC Zürich an, jedoch sollte es schon in den ersten Minuten nicht sonderlich gut für die Thuner aussehen. Die Züricher führten mit drei Toren, doch dann holten die Thuner noch ordentlich auf. FCZ hat sich zu sehr auf seinen Lorbeeren ausgeruht, was Thun ausgenutzt hat. Es wurde ein Tor nach dem nächsten geschossen, doch am Ende sollte es nur für Gleichstand ausreichen. Das Spiel wurde mit 3:3 beendet, was eine bittere Pille für FC Thun war. FC Sion konnte sich nämlich einen Sieg sichern, sodass nun klar war, dass der achte Platz für FC Thun nicht mehr möglich ist. Dabei hat Schneider sein Team vorher noch gewarnt, den Gegner nicht zu unterschätzen: „Es darf keine Rolle spielen, wie sich FC Zürich zeigt. Unser Fokus sollte darauf liegen, wie wir entscheiden, auftreten und das Spiel gestalten.“, gab er an. Helfen sollte es leider nicht, weshalb Thun auf den neunten Platz abrutschte und somit nach zehn Jahre aus der Super League ausschied.
